I'll Be OK
Being a Man in a Modern World
One need not look very far to see the problems faced by men at a time where society is trying to rebalance its support for minorities and women. In the past men passed into adulthood by the close involvement of fathers, uncles and grandparents. An disciplined education system, a stint in the military during times of war and the resocialization afforded by industrial corporate employment formed the cornerstones of a foundation for men's life. Today, much of that underlying support no longer exists and men are very troubled. They seek mental health services less, die younger, and are often depressed, under-employed and lacking in identities. This causes them to abandon their families, engage in extra-marital affairs, sabotage their careers and fail themselves and the others depending on them. Lacking in emotional strength and energy for themselves, they are unable to give to others.

Strategies for Assisting Men
My experience is that men benefit best from mental health services under the following conditions:

1. When participating in family systems therapy to support their spouse and children.
2. When mentored by another man they admire and respect.
3. When coached in techniques to help them deal with relationships, work life and aging.
4. When in a group of men focusing on issues unique to men.

Over the next year, the Sandal-Miller Group will develop the internal coaching, mentoring and group support for men.

Depression and Relationships
Career Stepping Stones and Cross-Roads
Disruptive Technologies and the 21st Century

The turn of the century and the recent economic situation have revealed fault lines in the old models. Men have always had to deal with crossing a chasm from the models given to them by their parents in childhood, but now, the models of work life and family life are being disrupted. Many men who attended college are now finding that that original education no longer serves them and they feel like they are starting over when job loss occurs. The pursuit of leverage lifestyles, the family's identity tied to high income and job position begin to crumble just about the time the kids are ready to go to college and things appear to be going well. Large numbers of us are relocating from the coastal areas inland and while it presents the opportunity to take up flyfishing and enjoy nature, the requirements to start a business and feed the system seem overwhelming.

The remainder of our lives will be characterized by disruptive technologies, a need for life-long education, management of stress and personal health and new lifestyles. While this may apply to women as well as men, we feel focusing on men's issues through coaching, mentoring and group support best tackle the issue.
